# Lesson 1.3: Bid, Ask, Spread, Slippage, Swap, and Funding

Every trader has experienced this frustrating moment: you open a Short trade, place your Stop Loss above a resistance high, watch a bullish candle wick stop a few pips _below_ your line and reverse down toward your target: yet your trade was already closed at a loss. The culprit is not a platform glitch; it is the mechanics of **Bid**, **Ask**, and **Spread**. In this lesson, you will learn step by step how orders are priced and filled, how to buffer Short Stop Losses using the **4CastMachine AI** formula, why spreads widen up to 10-fold at `17:00 EST` rollover, and how overnight **Swap** (including **Triple Swap Wednesday**) and 8-hour **Crypto Funding Rates** work.

**Everyday analogy: the airport currency exchange board:** When you walk past an airport currency exchange booth, the screen always shows two prices for the US Dollar: a lower price like `We Buy at 1.0840` and a higher price like `We Sell at 1.0852`. Financial markets work the exact same way every millisecond: the market always buys from you at the lower [**Bid** price and sells to you at the higher **Ask** price](<https://app.forecastcity.com/academy/glossary/glossary#bid-ask-and-spread>).

## Step 1: Bid, Ask, and Spread: why every trade starts slightly negative

At any given microsecond, every symbol in your trading terminal has two live prices:

- **Bid Price (Lower Price):** The highest price a buyer in the order book is willing to pay right now. When you want to **Sell**, you sell to that buyer at the **Bid** price.
- **Ask Price (Higher Price):** The lowest price a seller in the order book is willing to accept right now. When you want to **Buy**, you buy from that seller at the **Ask** price.
- **Spread (`Ask − Bid`):** The gap between the Ask and Bid prices. This gap is the market maker's and liquidity provider's fee for instant execution.

Let's trace what happens the exact millisecond you click **Buy** on `1.00` standard lot of `EUR/USD` when the quote reads `Bid = 1.08500 / Ask = 1.08512` (a `1.2-pip` spread):

1. Because you are **Buying**, your order is filled at the higher **Ask price (`1.08512`)**.
2. If you wanted to close that Buy trade one millisecond later, you would have to **Sell** it back to the market at the lower **Bid price (`1.08500`)**.
3. Therefore, the instant your trade opens, your floating PnL reads `-1.2 pips` (`-$12.00` on `1.00` lot). Price must rise at least `1.2` pips just for your trade to reach `$0.00` break-even.

## Step 2: Why Short trades stop out before the candle touches your line

Here is the rule that catches `90%` of traders off guard: **by default, trading charts draw every candlestick's Open, High, Low, and Close using ONLY the Bid price.** The higher **Ask** price floats invisibly above the candle by the exact width of the current spread.

Look at the two panels below to compare how **Long (Buy)** and **Short (Sell)** positions open and close:

![Two-panel chart diagram comparing Long (Buy) execution on Ask/Bid against Short (Sell) execution, showing how the invisible Ask line triggers a tight Short Stop Loss before the Bid candle touches the level, while the 4CM-AI buffered stop survives.](https://m.forecastcity.com/t/tnt_forecastcity/media/af/af3003d323095126c2de6cf95634bf2c2257d6b238f40d1dcd8c3a58da29552f.png)

Why Short Stop Losses trigger before the visible Bid candle touches your line, and how the 4CastMachine AI spread + ATR buffer protects your position.

1. **Long (Buy) Position Lifecycle:** You open a Buy trade at the **Ask** price, and you close it (both Take Profit and Stop Loss) by Selling at the **Bid** price. Because the chart candles are drawn using the **Bid** price, your Long Stop Loss triggers at the exact moment the visible candle touches your Stop Loss line.
2. **Short (Sell) Position Lifecycle & The Invisible Ask Line:** You open a Short trade by Selling at the **Bid** price, which means closing that Short trade: whether at Take Profit or at your **Stop Loss**: requires **Buying back at the higher Ask price**. If you short Gold (`XAU/USD`) inside a `4CM-AI` **Sell zone** at `$2656.00` and place a tight Stop Loss right at `$2660.00` while the spread is `$0.35`, your stop triggers the instant the visible candle (Bid) reaches `$2659.65`: because at `Bid = $2659.65`, the invisible **Ask price is already at `$2660.00`**. Similarly, for your Short Take Profit at `$2632.00` to fill, the visible Bid candle must drop to `$2631.65` so the Ask line touches `$2632.00`.

**The official 4CastMachine AI Stop Loss Buffer Formula:** In the [**4CastMachine AI intraday strategy**](<https://app.forecastcity.com/academy/glossary/glossary#4castmachine-ai-intraday-strategy>), you never place a Stop Loss directly on the raw pivot line. Instead, you add a volatility cushion equal to **10% of the symbol's annual daily range (`ATR(264, D)`) plus the spread**:
• **Long Stop Loss:** `4CM-AI Pivot − 10% ATR(264, D)`
• **Short Stop Loss:** `4CM-AI Pivot + 10% ATR(264, D) + Spread`
For example, on Gold with a pivot at `$2660.00`, an annual daily `ATR(264, D)` of `$40.00` (`10% = $4.00`), and a `$0.40` spread, your buffered Short Stop sits safely at `$2660.00 + $4.00 + $0.40 = $2664.40`.

## Step 3: Slippage, Rollover spread widening, Swap, and Crypto Funding

Beyond the normal daytime spread, three structural mechanisms can widen spreads or charge holding fees if you hold trades across specific timestamps. Inspect the three panels below:

![Three-panel diagram showing 17:00 EST rollover spread widening and news slippage, T+2 settlement and Triple Swap Wednesday on Forex and Gold, and the 8-hour Crypto Perpetual Funding Rate clock.](https://m.forecastcity.com/t/tnt_forecastcity/media/e4/e416a990eb5961518cec1bef6e00b076391fad0ac4a34448ccad9e0a86da3081.png)

The three execution and holding-cost clocks: 17:00 EST rollover spread widening, Triple Swap Wednesday, and 8-hour Crypto Perpetual Funding settlements.

1. **News Slippage & The 17:00 EST (21:00–22:00 UTC) Rollover Trap:** [**Slippage**](<https://app.forecastcity.com/academy/glossary/glossary#slippage-and-rollover-widening>) happens when a Market or Stop order triggers during a high-impact news release (like `US NFP` or `CPI` at `08:30 EST`) and fills several pips worse than requested because the order book emptied out. Even on days with zero news, every day at **17:00 EST (New York Close, 21:00–22:00 UTC)**, global Tier-1 banks pause liquidity for 15 to 45 minutes to reset their daily settlement books. During this rollover window, a normal `1.0-pip` spread on `EUR/USD` or `GBP/JPY` can jump to `8` to `15` pips, sweeping tight Short Stop Losses even while price sits still.
2. **Overnight Swap & Triple Swap Wednesday (T+2 Settlement):** When you hold a Forex, Index, or Commodity CFD trade past the daily `17:00 EST` rollover, your broker applies an overnight interest adjustment called a [**Swap**](<https://app.forecastcity.com/academy/glossary/glossary#swap-and-triple-wednesday>). Because physical interbank transactions take **two business days (`T+2`)** to settle, a position held past **Wednesday 17:00 EST** settles on Friday and rolls across Saturday and Sunday to Monday. As a result, brokers charge (or credit) **3× the normal daily Swap on Wednesday night**: known as **Triple Swap Wednesday**. For example, if holding `1.00` lot Long on Gold (`XAU/USD`) costs `-$24.00` per night on Monday and Tuesday, holding that same position past Wednesday `17:00 EST` costs `3 × (-$24.00) = -$72.00` in a single night.
3. **Crypto Perpetual Funding Rate (Every 8 Hours at 00:00, 08:00 & 16:00 UTC):** Crypto perpetual futures (like `BTCUSDT.P`) never expire, so exchanges use a peer-to-peer [**Funding Rate**](<https://app.forecastcity.com/academy/glossary/glossary#crypto-funding-rate>) every 8 hours to anchor the contract price to Spot. When the market is bullish and funding is positive (e.g., `+0.03%`), **Longs pay Shorts**; when funding is negative, **Shorts pay Longs**. Crucially, the funding fee is calculated on your **full leveraged notional position size**, not your margin. If you put up `$1000` margin at `20x` leverage (a `$20000` notional Bitcoin position) during a bull frenzy with `+0.05%` funding per 8 hours, you pay `$20000 × 0.0005 = -$10.00` every 8 hours (`-$30.00/day`, or `30%` of your margin in 10 days.).

## Summary table: Execution and holding costs across markets

<table><thead><tr><th>Cost Mechanism</th><th>When it occurs</th><th>How it affects your trade</th><th>Professional defense rule</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Bid–Ask Spread</strong></td><td>Every entry &amp; exit</td><td>Longs buy at Ask / sell at Bid; Shorts sell at Bid / buy back at Ask.</td><td>Always add <code>+ Spread</code> (plus <code>10% ATR(264, D)</code>) above the pivot on Short Stop Losses.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Rollover Widening</strong></td><td>Daily <code>16:55–18:05 EST</code> (<code>21:00–22:00 UTC</code>)</td><td>Spreads widen <code>5×</code> to <code>10×</code> during daily bank book settlement.</td><td>Never open new scalps during the rollover hour; keep stops buffered well away from the range.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Triple Swap Wednesday</strong></td><td>Wednesday at <code>17:00 EST</code> rollover</td><td>Charges <code>3 days</code> of overnight interest (Sat + Sun settlement) at once.</td><td>Check your broker's Swap Long/Short values before holding swing positions across Wednesday night.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Crypto Funding Rate</strong></td><td>Daily at <code>00:00</code>, <code>08:00</code>, and <code>16:00 UTC</code></td><td>Charged on full leveraged notional value only if open at the exact timestamp second.</td><td>Avoid over-leveraged Long holds when funding spikes above <code>+0.05%</code>; close before the timestamp if exiting anyway.</td></tr></tbody></table>
